RunFlat Systems

Mobility that survives
the worst mile.

A RunFlat is a structural insert inside the tire that carries the vehicle when the tire can't. Ours is a three-segment antiballistic polymer system — engineered for the armored vehicle market, and built to outperform traditional one-piece rubber.

Run flat inserts by vehicle platform

Every platform carries a different wheel, bead width, and load profile. We build insert kits matched to each: HMMWV run flat inserts for the Humvee fleet, JLTV run flat inserts for the Army's Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, M-ATV run flat inserts for MRAP operations, and MaxxPro run flat inserts for Navistar armor. Commercial and armored applications are covered on our commercial truck run flats and armored truck run flat inserts pages. Not sure which insert fits your wheel? Check the run flat inserts by vehicle and NSN guide, or see military run flat systems for the full defense lineup and polymer run flat inserts for antiballistic segmented design.

How It Works

A polymer ring that carries the load when the air is gone.

Three antiballistic polymer segments bolt around the wheel rim inside the tire. Under normal driving they're along for the ride. The moment the tire loses pressure — from ballistic damage, terrain, or sabotage — the RunFlat becomes the load path, keeping the tire on the bead and the vehicle under the driver's control.

  • Keeps the driver in control after ballistic or terrain-related tire damage.
  • Holds the bead so the deflated tire stays seated at speed and under maneuver.
  • Polymer, not rubber less unsprung mass at every corner of the vehicle.
  • Field-serviceable unbolts for inspection or replacement on site.
Why Segmented Polymer

Why segmented polymer.

Segmented polymer construction delivers advantages a comparable insert can't — at every corner of the vehicle.

Lighter Corner Weight

Roughly 15% lighter than comparable alternatives. Multiply that across every wheel position and you get back payload, fuel economy, and suspension life.

Faster to Field

Bolt-together segments install with hand tools — no specialist fitting equipment, no shipping wheels out and waiting.

Built for Armor

Antiballistic polymer designed for the armored and security vehicle market — protection engineered in, not just mass added on.

Serviceable, Reusable

Unbolt to inspect, service, or transfer between wheels. A segmented system is an asset you maintain, not a consumable you press in once.

Field Procedure

Run-flat insert assembly & installation — hand tools, no machine press.

A segmented polymer run-flat insert bolts together around the rim — and unbolts the same way. Whether you call it run flat assembly, insert installation, or a runflat inserting job, the procedure is the same: no press, no specialist equipment, no shipping wheels to a depot. We perform this assembly for military and commercial vehicle fleets, and supply the full procedure used in our install guide and on our floor. Fleet maintenance shops: we assemble inserts for your wheel program or train your crew.

  1. Grease the tire. Apply RunFlat lubricant uniformly around the inner tread — one tube per tire. This is the friction barrier that protects the insert during run-flat operation.
  2. Drop in the segments. Feed the three polymer segments through the tire bead and position them around the inside of the tire, labels facing outward, clear of the valve.
  3. Connect the segments. Fit the wedge bolts and clamping plates at each joint. Double locking washers under every bolt head, thread adhesive on every bolt — both locking methods, every time.
  4. Torque to spec. Tighten each bolt to the value marked on the RunFlat identification label with the supplied torque-limiting tool. Work in sequence.
  5. Seat on the rim base. Lower the tire-and-insert assembly over the rim base and seat the lower bead — by hand, no fitting machine.
  6. O-ring, then the outer ring. Seat the O-ring seal, bolt on the outer ring in a criss-cross pattern to the wheel's torque spec, and inflate inside a safety cage.

Disassembly is the reverse: deflate and break the bead safely, unbolt the outer ring, lift the tire free, and remove the clamping plates and wedge bolts one joint at a time. The segments come out through the bead — no cutting. Because the polymer doesn't perish, inspected segments can be relubricated and reused on the next wheel, or moved between wheel positions during scheduled maintenance.

Need a removal tool or a fitment review? The segmented design needs no dedicated press, and we supply the torque-limiting tool with every order. See the full interactive installation walkthrough or request a fitment review.

Toota RunFlat Lubricant

The unsung hero of run-flat range.

When a tire runs deflated, it drags against the insert and generates serious heat. Our long-life RunFlat grease goes in at installation and slashes that friction — protecting the tire, protecting the insert, and extending how far you can actually drive on a flat.

  • Long-life grease formulation stable under sustained run-flat heat.
  • Applied once, at install no in-service maintenance.
  • Protects both components tire carcass and polymer insert.
  • Available with every RunFlat order or supplied separately for your existing fleet program.

Questions

RunFlat FAQ

How far can a vehicle drive after losing tire pressure?

With the system fitted and lubricated, up to 100 km of continued mobility is achievable following ballistic or terrain-related deflation — enough to leave the threat area and reach support, not just limp to the shoulder.

Do we need special equipment to install these?

No. That's the point. The three polymer segments bolt together around the rim with standard hand tools and a torque wrench. See the interactive installation walkthrough.

How much weight does polymer save?

Typically around 15% versus a comparable runflat — and that's rotating, unsprung mass, where weight savings pay off most in handling, fuel, and component life.

Is the lubricant required?

Strongly recommended. Run-flat operation generates friction heat between tire and insert; the long-life RunFlat grease is what keeps that heat from destroying the tire early and cutting your run-flat range short.

How do you assemble and disassemble a segmented RunFlat?

Bolt-together, by hand. Three polymer segments fit around the rim, connect with wedge bolts and clamping plates, and torque to the spec printed on the label — no press, no specialist equipment. Disassembly is the reverse: unbolt the joints one at a time and the segments come out through the bead. The installation walkthrough shows every step.

Is there a special removal tool for the RunFlat?

No dedicated removal tool is required. The segmented design unbolts with standard hand tools — the only specialized item is the torque-limiting tool we supply with every order for installation. Compare that with one-piece inserts, which must be pressed out with equipment most units don't have.

Can Toota supply the complete wheel — not just the insert?

Yes. We build complete single and two-piece wheel assemblies — rim, RunFlat, lubricant, and tire — mounted, torqued, optionally CARC-painted, and delivered ready to bolt on.
